Patients with a history of Diabetes should have an annual Diabetic eye exam. This is because elevated blood sugar levels can cause damage to the blood vessels inside the eye. These damaged blood vessels become weak and leaky, or they can close down altogether. In advanced cases, new unhealthy blood vessels can grow on the retina and cause further damage. All of these changes can cause significant vision impairment.
